The Best Turkey Calls You Need For Hunting

The wild turkey is a relatively skiddish bird, and getting one within your comfortable shooting range can be a tough thing to do – even for some experienced turkey hunters. Using the right turkey call can help you accomplish this, but there are a ton of different calls out there. How do you know which ones are worth using, and which ones are just a gimmick?

That’s where The Turkey Hunt comes in. We’ll let you know which turkey calls will increase your chances of success, and which calls won’t. After all, everyone has their go to call, and there is a reason for this. That turkey call works, and that’s what we’re here to do – tell you what works, and what doesn’t.

If you don’t already know, turkeys will let off all types of different calls: from yelps, to purrs, to the infamous gobble – these calls all mean different things. To make things even more complicated, you have to know what types of turkey hunting calls are best at what specific types of calls.

What we do is break down the best turkey calls for the best scenarios. After all, you probably won’t want to use a slate call to make a loud gobble, would you? I know I couldn’t pull such a feat off.

Best Turkey Calls You Need to Try

This list of the best turkey calls is pretty much guaranteed to step up your hunting game. These calls are tried, tested, and will absolutely help you nail that beard dragging gobbler. Best Turkey Mouth Call (Diaphragm Call)

Appalachian Custom Calls

The mouth call (diaphragm call) is something that every single turkey hunter needs to learn how to use. Of all the calls (electronic calls excluded, because who uses them anyway?), it is the only call that allows a hunter to continue to use both hands, despite the fact you are actively calling.

This is so incredibly useful for many different reasons, but being able to be at the high ready or low ready with your weapon while continuing to call is invaluable.

The best turkey mouth call award goes to Appalachian Custom Calls. This company makes some outstanding diaphragms, and doesn’t charge an arm and leg for them either. They have the Drama Queen, Pinky, and the Screamin’ Demon

Drama Queen

  • 3 reed batwing cut

Pinky

  • 2 reed double cut

Sreamin' Demon

  • 2 reed w cut

Appalachian Custom Calls make all types of calls that you should check out in addition to their mouth calls. That said, their mouth calls stand out. They sound fantastic, and fit the roof of your mouth perfectly.

The air runs off the diaphragm really smooth, which is a quality that not all mouth call makers can pull off. The reeds are tight, and the flex they make results in as real of a turkey sound as you can get with a mouth call.

Best Box Call

Lynch's World Champion Box Turkey Call

It’s actually harder than I anticipated to find the best box call. Aside from the fact that there are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of different ones out there, a lot of box calls can vary in sound all because of the environment you are in, and the type of wood they are made of. The same exact box call for turkey hunting can have a certain tone from it in Florida, yet have a completely different sound to it in Colorado. The humidity messes with your box call a lot.

Anyways, we’ve went through a lot of these box calls and came up with the best possible box calls you can use when hunting for your birds. Box calls are great once you get the finesse down, and I hope you have as much success with these box calls as we did.

Lynch’s did it again with their World Champion Box Turkey Call. This company makes phenomenal box calls at very reasonable prices. For those that don’t know, the World Champion is a 75 year old, tried and tested design. They perform well, are made with high-quality straight grain mahogany, and are individually hand tuned before going to the shelves. This double-sided box call will play insanely good hen sounds on one side, and a great gobbler on the other.

  • double-sided design
  • hand tuned for perfection
  • 3″ x 4.5″ x 11.75″
  • 0.4 lbs
